Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) Overview:

What is it?

For the vast majority of people, TMD (tempromandibular joint disorders, commonly known as just TMJ) is a downward spiral of increasing tightness and pain. Due to a variety of possible factors, the muscles in and around the jaw, head, and neck all tighten.

This causes you to chronically contract the muscles of the jaw, which creates pain and joint movement dysfunction. Symptoms of dynamic jaw clenching, grinding, and tension ultimately creates more pain and tightness and advances the cycle of dysfunction of the TMJ joint.

Work Health

Work Health.

Green Physical Therapy works closely with the team of workers’ compensation professionals providing solutions for injured workers through prevention, management, treatment and case closure.

Work Hardening & Conditioning:

When injured workers meet established short and long-term goals via physical therapy or hand/occupational therapy but are unable to return to work due to remaining functional deficits or deconditioning, they may benefit from a higher level of therapeutic intervention designed specifically with a primary goal of returning to work.

Injured workers who benefit most from these programs are usually at least 30 days out from their injury and have a medium or higher physical demand category job to return to. These are full body intensive conditioning programs that focus on work simulation activities to get injured workers back to work.

Work Hardening:

A highly structured, goal-oriented, individualized intervention program designed to return the employee to work. Our Work Hardening programs utilize real or simulated work activities designed to restore physical, behavioral and vocational functions. Work Hardening addresses the issues of productivity, safety, physical tolerances and worker behaviors.

Work Conditioning:

An intensive, goal-oriented conditioning program designed to restore neuromuscular and musculoskeletal function including strength, power, endurance, joint mobility, ROM, motor control, cardiovascular endurance and functional abilities. The primary objective of the Work Conditioning program is to restore physical capacity and function to enable the injured worker to return to his or her pre-injury job.

Orthopedics is a medical specialty concerned with the correction of functional impairments of the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system includes all the body’s bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and joints.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation Overview:

Orthopedic rehabilitation encompasses the following programs and services we provide every day to the patients in our care:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Hand Therapy

Additional programs and treatments that our physical therapists may utilize include:

  • Balance Training
  • HVLA Manipulation of the Spine
  • McKenzie Method
  • Postural Education
  • Spinal Traction
  • Therapeutic Exercise
  • Therapeutic Modalitites

Injuries or post-surgical conditions of the musculoskeletal system (made up of bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints and other connective tissue) often contribute to limited and painful motion. This can lead to pain and a decrease in daily activities. Physical therapists often use a variety of specific, hands-on techniques, called manual therapy, to improve mobility in joints and soft tissues.

Manual Therapy:

As board-certified orthopedic specialists, we are highly trained clinicians who are able to assess whether the muscles and joints have hypo- (restricted) or hyper- (excessive) mobility. Once restrictions or other dysfunctions are identified, we use various manual therapy techniques to reduce pain, improve mobility, facilitate movement, increase soft tissue extensibility and restore function.
